The Sierra Club Guide to Painting in Nature by Cathy Ann Johnson,

The Sierra Club Guide to Painting in Nature by Cathy Ann Johnson,
Plein-air painting -- the art of painting outdoors, on-site, and completing the work in one sitting -- became famous with the advent of Impressionism in France in the 1870s. It's still a fresh and spontaneous way to capture the moment -- and an ideal approach for anyone whose appreciation of nature's beauty and variety prompts an impulse to respond with brush, pen, or pencil. In this lively, easygoing guide, prize-winning artist, author, and instructor Cathy Johnson provides a friendly introduction to all facets of plein-air painting -- from selecting and using basic materials (including pencils, pastels, watercolors, acrylics, brushes, and papers) to weathering outdoor conditions and dealing with the challenges of capturing ever-changing light. Richly illustrated with delightful studies, sketches, and paintings by the author and others, this book will inspire and guide beginners and accomplished artists alike in the delightful pastime of painting out where the sun touches your face, the wind ruffles your hair (and your paper!), and birdsong provides the background music.

Fresco-secco - Fresco-secco is a painting technique in which watercolors are applied to dry plaster that has been moistened to simulate fresh plaster. In true fresco painting (buon fresco), the plaster is still fresh and has not dried when the watercolors are introduced.

Terminal hair - Terminal hair is developed hair, which is generally longer, coarser, thicker, and darker than vellus hair. Phases of growth in terminal hair are more apparent than in vellus hair; terminal hair generally has a longer anagen phase.

Camel hair - Camel hair is, variously, the hair of a camel; a type of cloth made from camel hair; or a substitute for authentic camel hair. When woven into haircloth, using the outer protective fur called gaurd hair, camel hair is coarse and inflexible.

Abd-el-Tif prize - Abd-el-Tif prize was a price of painting. Decreed on contest, it was created in 1907 pennies the impulse of Leonce Bénédite, conservative of the Museum of Luxembourg and Claude Jonnart, governor general of Algeria, in order to make it possible to young talented artists to remain one year or two, sometimes more, with the expenses of the State in the Villa Abd-el-Hair in Algiers.
